Willie Clanton Spaulding Interview, February 17, 1978

Willie Clanton Spaulding describes growing up on a sheep ranch outside of Billings, Montana, during the early 20th century, and recalls how Billings was founded. She discusses her father’s relationship with the neighboring Crow Nation, from whom he leased grazing land, and mentions a Crow powwow she attended as a child. Spaulding talks about the Chinese cooks that her family hired, and describes travelling by horse to Yellowstone National Park with her mother and siblings. She mentions the important political figures who made train stops in Billings. Spaulding recalls attending the University of Montana, Missoula, starting in 1907. She describes the campus and lists the women faculty members at that time. She concludes by briefly talking the differences between Billings and Missoula.
